What are the Most Dangerous Intersections in Charlotte?

Accidents happen, and almost everyone has been involved in a traffic crash at one time or another. Fortunately, most accidents are minor and result in insignificant damages and injuries. Sometimes, however, accidents are more serious, and victims may experience severe bodily harm as well as damage to their vehicles. If you are familiar with some of the areas around the city, you know that some intersections seem more dangerous than others. Certain places are more prone to crashes.

How Does North Carolina Determine Hazardous Intersections?

The North Carolina Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) identifies, evaluates, and reviews accident data from across the state. They investigate accidents along with plotting their locations. HSIP safety evaluation engineers review factors such as the number of recent accidents, the type of crashes and severity of the accidents, and other factors. From this crash data, they compile a list of the most dangerous intersections in major metropolitan areas in the state.

10 Most Dangerous Intersections in Charlotte

The most recent report designates these intersections in Charlotte as the most dangerous:

  • Margaret Wallace Rd. near Saint Peters Ln.
  • T. Harris Blvd near Laura Dr.

Many of these intersections are near major highways or roads and likely have quite a bit of traffic much of the time.

Potentially Hazardous Intersections

In addition to dangerous intersections, NCDOT also designates some areas as potentially hazardous. The type of crash, the severity of the accident, and an increase in recent accidents are just some of the factors they use to determine potentially hazardous intersections.

  • I-277 at 3rd/4th Streets (NC 16)
  • Graham St. at University City Blvd.
  • I-85 at Sugar Creek Rd.

Preventing Accidents at Intersections

Many accidents occur at intersections. While you do not need to stay away from dangerous or hazardous roads, you will want to use extra caution. There are many things going on at once, including multiple lanes of traffic, traffic signals, turn lanes, pedestrian crossings, and more. It is important to remain vigilant and drive defensively while behind the wheel, especially when approaching intersections. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of accidents, including those that occur at intersections. Pay attention to the road, and do not use your phone. If an intersection seems busy, be cautious.

If you are involved in an accident, always call the police immediately. Seek medical care for your injuries. Take photos of the vehicles before you move them if it is safe to do so. The negligent party is responsible for damages, including medical bills, property damage, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more.
