North Carolina Traffic Safety

North Carolina Traffic Safety

Although manufacturers are making vehicles with more safety features than ever before, the number of accidents is still significant. North Carolina ranks consistently in the top 10 states with the most accidents. Traffic safety is something that everyone needs to be concerned about. People can learn how to stay safe on the roads and how to prevent accidents from happening. North Carolina takes traffic safety seriously and participates in the Vision Zero initiative.

North Carolina Vision Zero

North Carolina has adopted the Vision Zero initiative. Vision Zero is a collaborative effort to reduce and eliminate the number of highway deaths and injuries in North Carolina. It is patterned after a similar Swedish program. The goal is to envision a world where there are no traffic-related deaths. North Carolina has identified a number of safety focus areas including:

  • Seat belt safety
  • Distracted driving
  • Speeding
  • Drinking & driving
  • Lane departure
  • Drowsy driving
  • Drugged driving
  • Pedestrian safety
  • Teen drivers
  • Bicycle safety
  • Older drivers
  • Children
  • Motorcycle safety
  • Train safety
  • School bus safety
  • Work zone safety
  • Commercial motor vehicles

Programs and initiatives are designed to target these specific areas of safety concern. Through the implementation of safety measures and education, people can prevent accidents and injuries.

Preventing Traffic-Related Accidents

Through various programs and advertisements, North Carolina provides information to educate the public regarding the most significant areas of safety concern. Safety matters are also made in conjunction with traffic laws. For example, wearing a seatbelt is the best way to prevent injuries and fatalities in a crash. The use of cell phones for texting is a concern for distracted driving. North Carolina law prohibits drivers from texting while behind the wheel. A new law increases the time that new teen drivers must spend practicing with a permit before they can receive their driver’s license.

North Carolina Traffic Safety Conference & Expo

The NC Traffic Safety Conference & Expo is an event typically held annually. It is designed for North Carolina professionals to get the latest information and education about safety programs, education, research, enforcement, and technology. The three-day event, held in April, provides seminars, workshops, and education from some of the best safety professionals in the state and the country. The event is held at the Greenville Convention Center. The conference is open to the public and there are enrollment fees.

NC Vision Zero Partners

Vision Zero is an initiative that includes a variety of partners. Some of the partners are North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Highway Safety Research Center, BikeWalk NC, North Carolina Department of Transportation, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services, and the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, among others. These and other partners assist in educating the public about safety issues.
