Pedestrian Car Accident Deaths on the Rise

Charlotte Injury Lawyer Matt Arnold answers the question: “How much does your firm charge to represent me in a personal injury case?”

Every year, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) prepares various reports on car accident statistics all across the United States. Recently, the GHSA has released its findings for 2018. A notable finding from last year is the high rate of pedestrian deaths from car accidents. The report found that the number of pedestrian deaths that occurred in 2018 is at the highest it has been since 1990. There was approximately a 4% increase from the number of deaths that occurred in 2017. Pedestrian deaths were studied from each state across the country to prepare this report. Within the report, there are statistics of increases in deaths in different states. North Carolina is one of the states with the largest amount of pedestrian deaths and a high increase year-over-year of pedestrian deaths from car accidents.

There has been a growing increase of deaths steadily occurring from 2009. In 2018, pedestrian deaths account for 16% of all traffic deaths. The study found that half of all states had increases in their pedestrian deaths, with the remaining half either decreasing or staying the same.

Specifically in North Carolina, there was a 23% increase in pedestrian deaths in 2018 from 2017. The report finds that approximately 102 pedestrian deaths occurred in North Carolina in 2018. While 102 deaths might not seem significant, accounting for only .02% of deaths across the country, it is a rising number that is of concern, nonetheless. These reports and studies are an excellent tool for North Carolina officials to use in determining new laws or statutes to try and curb the increase in pedestrian fatalities.

There is no one cause that the study attributes to the increase in deaths, but the GHSA does have its suspicions. Smartphone use by drivers has certainly increased over time. Using a phone or any other electronic device while driving is distracting and can result in an accident and injury to you or others around you. The smartphone trend is not just limited to drivers. Pedestrians can also be guilty of being distracted by their phones and not paying attention to vehicles driving around them. Heavy darkness, impairment by alcohol and/or drugs, and busy urban areas are also contributing factors to rising pedestrian accident rates.
