What Causes Motorcycle Accidents?
Motorcycle accidents are often caused by other drivers. Motorcycles are not always easy for other drivers to see, especially from large vehicles such as pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs. Speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving can also result in accidents involving motorcycles. Drivers must take care to drive defensively and be on the lookout for smaller vehicles.
Motorcycle Accidents Often Result in Serious Injuries
Motorcycle accidents can result in very severe injuries. Some of the most common types of injuries include head trauma, back and neck injuries, broken bones, lacerations, burns, and contusions. Head trauma occurs very often and may be life-threatening. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a medical condition in which the brain is seriously injured in a sudden impact, such as occurs when the head hits pavement. Even with immediate emergency care, a patient could face long-term disabilities as a result.
Negligence in Motorcycle Accidents
In any type of accident, the negligent driver is responsible for any damages they caused. Negligence is the failure to act in the way that a reasonable person would act under the same circumstances. Speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and failure to yield, are just a few examples of negligence in motor vehicle accidents. It is important to note that North Carolina uses the strict contributory negligence law. This means that you may only receive compensation from a negligent person when you do not have any negligence in the crash.
What to Do After a Serious Crash
You will want to take some important steps immediately following a serious vehicle accident. Call the police to report the accident. Law enforcement will respond to handle the scene, interview drivers and witnesses, and collect evidence. Seek medical care as soon as possible. Sometimes an injury may seem minor but is actually quite serious, so you should not delay treatment. Report the accident to the insurance company. Talk to an experienced personal injury attorney. Your lawyer will work on your behalf to resolve the matter and assist you in obtaining compensation for your injuries.
In this case, we do not yet know what caused the crash and which driver or drivers were negligent. The victims of the crash will need to gather and review evidence to determine how to proceed. You may be owed money for your damages, which may include medical bills, lost wages, and money for pain and suffering, among other things.
