Two Killed in Head-On Crash in Southeast Charlotte

A serious head-on crash resulted in two deaths. The accident happened on Monroe Road near the intersection of Glendora Drive in southeast Charlotte. Several emergency crews responded to the crash between a Charlotte water truck and a Honda Civic, which happened at about 2 pm. Both the driver and passenger of the Honda died as a result of their injuries, and the driver of the water truck sustained serious injuries. Detectives continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

Head-On Collisions

This accident was a head-on collision. A head-on collision occurs when two vehicles collide with a front impact. Generally, this means that one vehicle was driving in the wrong lane of traffic at the time of the crash. Head-on accidents are often extremely serious and can result in severe injuries or fatalities. Often, the vehicles have a very forceful impact that immediately deploys the airbags. There is usually severe front-end damage to both vehicles.

What Caused The Accident?

In this case, the 55-year-old driver of the Honda was traveling west when she crossed over the double yellow lines and hit the water truck head-on. Investigations are still underway; however, it appears that speed may have been a factor in the severity of the crash, according to CMPA.  In addition, investigators say that they suspect impairment of the driver of the Honda, which collided with the water truck. The 64-year-old passenger of the Honda died at the hospital, and the driver was transported to the hospital, where she died about a week later.

Detectives are continuing the investigation but have released information about the possible negligence of the Honda driver. Speeding and impairment are both types of negligence while driving. Negligence means that a driver knew or should have known that what they were doing was dangerous and could cause harm to another, yet did it anyway. In this accident, the driver of the water truck was likely not negligent, as it was traveling in the proper lane of traffic and proceeding normally.

What to Do After an Accident

There are several things to do when you are involved in a traffic accident. Call the police immediately. The police will assist at the scene of the crash, provide a preliminary investigation, and make an accident report. North Carolina requires you to file an accident report anytime there are injuries or property damages that exceed $1,000. Exchange driver’s license and insurance information with the other driver. Seek medical attention as soon as possible. Do not make statements at the scene, as they could make it more difficult to prove your claim later. The negligent party is responsible for the damages they caused, including medical costs and more. Consult with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney before you speak to the insurance company. You want to make sure you protect your rights and ensure that the negligent driver pays for your expenses.
