Uber Driver Killed in Head-On Collision

uberUber Driver Killed in Head-On Collision

An Uber driver died, and her passenger was critically injured when the car they were in was hit head-on by another driver. The fatal accident happened near the intersection of Gaston Day School Road and Duke Street in Gastonia. A 19-year-old driver traveling at a high rate of speed lost control and crossed over the yellow line and into oncoming traffic, where he hit an Uber driver head-on. The crash started a chain reaction that resulted in additional injuries.

Head-On Crashes are Often Deadly

Among all the various types of accidents, head-on crashes often result in the most serious injuries and fatalities. A head-on collision occurs when one vehicle enters the oncoming lane of traffic, hitting another vehicle that is traveling in the opposite direction. Head-on crashes may happen at intersections, but are most deadly when they occur on highways. Both drivers as well as passengers in both vehicles are in danger of serious injuries or death when they collide with another car head-on.

What Causes Head-On Accidents?

A driver may cross over into oncoming traffic for a number of reasons. Inattention or distracted driving is one of the most common causes of accidents. Using a cell phone or texting while behind the wheel is a frequent reason for distracted driving. Another cause of head-on collisions may be impairment. Driving while intoxicated or while using drugs can cause a person to become uncoordinated or to make poor choices. In this case, initial police reports indicate the driver who caused the crash was speeding. A toxicology report is pending.

Rate of Speed Matters

The rate of speed when an accident happens is important because the faster a car is traveling, the more serious the crash is likely to be. In the case of a head-on collision, both cars may be traveling at a high rate of speed, going in different directions. This type of crash can immediately result in fatal injuries to both drivers. In this accident, the Uber driver was killed immediately, and the Uber passenger suffered critical injuries. The impact caused a chain reaction accident with two additional vehicles, and the drivers of both of those vehicles were listed in serious condition.

Who is at Fault for a Head-On Collision?

A head-on collision happens when two vehicles collide into each other from the front. Generally, an investigation must be done to determine which driver caused the crash. The police may close down the road while they review the details of the accident. They will look at the evidence, including where the vehicles collided and the damage to each vehicle. They may also take witness statements and review any surveillance video that might have captured the incident.  In this instance, one vehicle crossed over into the opposite lane of traffic, where the accident happened. The negligent driver is responsible for the damages to those injured or killed.
