Avoiding a Car Accident in North Carolina

Charlotte Personal Injury Attorney Matt Arnold answers the question: ” If an incident report was filled out, do I have a right to receive a copy?”

The majority of people all across the United States rely on automobiles to get around. This is true in North Carolina, as well. Lack of reliable public transportation systems and convenience are popular reasons that people turn to cars to get around. With so many cars on the road, there are many car accidents. Reports show that in 2016, there were 267,494 traffic crashes reported in North Carolina. Breaking this down, this averages to approximately 732 traffic crashes every day.

Even if probability is stacked against you, there are still precautions that can be taken to try and prevent a car accident.

  • Do not drive while distracted. Even though driving is so common, it should still be considered a big deal. You are driving a heavy vehicle at high speeds on the road. This requires full concentration at the task at hand. Distracted driving is one of the biggest causes and contributions to traffic accidents. Distracted driving includes talking on a cell phone, texting, having too many passengers in your car, and anything that can take your eyes or mind off of the road. You can never guarantee that something will not suddenly appear in your path on the road, and if you are driving without distractions, you are more likely to notice and be able to avoid these unexpected distractions.
  • Check your blind spots. Cars are equipped with multiple mirrors to give drivers a view of the areas surrounding their car so that they can see what is going on around them and drive appropriately. However, no matter the amount of mirrors, a driver will usually still have a blind spot. Make sure you know the area that is not fully covered by the mirrors so that you can take additional precautions to double check the blind spot.
  • Drive in safe conditions. While not always possible, try to avoid driving in inclement weather. Inclement weather can make driving more difficult and dangerous. Heavy rain, high winds, ice storms, and other conditions are not great to drive in. When possible, stay safe and stay off of the road.
  • Follow all traffic laws. Another way to try and stay safe on the road is to follow all of the traffic rules. Follow the speed limit, follow traffic lights, follow traffic signals, and obey other traffic laws. The laws are in place for a reason and are designed to give you the best chance at staying safe on the roads.

Even taking precautions and being the safest driver, there is no guarantee that you will not be involved in a car accident.
