What Type of Doctor Should I See Following an Accident?

Charlotte Personal Injury Attorney Matt Arnold answers the question: “May I choose my own doctor in a personal injury case?”

Whether you have been in a car accident, truck accident, bike accident, or a pedestrian accident injuries often result. After an accident, there is the possibility of filing a personal injury suit to recoup damages that resulted because of the injury. A successful personal injury suit needs injuries of the plaintiff to be substantiated by a doctor. There are so many different doctors out there, who should you see?

Visiting Your Primary Care Physician

First and foremost, after being involved in an accident you should seek medical attention for injuries immediately. If an injury requires immediate attention, the first step should be to go to the emergency room and be treated by the doctors on staff. After receiving any immediate attention needed, the next step is to make an appointment with your primary care physician. At this appointment, you will likely feel more comfortable with the doctor and give more details of any pain you are experiencing. Your primary care physician can make additional assessments of your injuries and recommend any specialist that you should see for further treatment.

Visiting a Chiropractor

Common injuries after an accident include injuries to the head, neck, and back. The pain associated with these injuries can be difficult to treat. A chiropractor is often able to help alleviate some of the pain you might be in and provide a course of treatment for further healing. Chiropractors specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular conditions. This includes injuries to the head, back, and neck. While chiropractors can treat these injuries and alleviate pain, they are not technically medical doctors. Some may seem wary of visiting a chiropractor because of this, but it is not necessarily a deterrent or negative aspect of a personal injury case.

Instead of using traditional medicine to treat injuries, a chiropractor focuses on adjusting the spine to treat head, neck or back pain. The lack of a medical degree does not take away from the validity of the treatment. Chiropractors are able to see the progress, or lack thereof, a patient experiences from injuries after an accident.

Importance of Visiting a Doctor

Regardless of the type of doctor visited, it is essential to seek medical attention after being injured if you are at all interested in pursuing a personal injury suit. There is a statute of limitations for filing the suit, therefore time is of the essence. There are only two years following the accident to file a personal injury case. Visiting a doctor or chiropractor can be helpful in providing evidence of the injury for calculating damages.
