Tips for Safe Travel Around the Holidays

Charlotte Personal Injury Attorney Matt Arnold answers the question: “What can you sue for in a personal injury case?”

The holiday season is upon us. For most of us that means spending time with family and friends, eating holiday treats, and celebrating the holiday season. With all of the enjoyment that the holiday season brings, it also has its stressors. One of the biggest stressors of the holiday season is traveling and feeling pressured to be everywhere at once to spend time with family and friends. The National Safety Counsel found that Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are some of the most dangerous times for travel. Increased volume of drivers on the roadways, the pressure to be at the location as soon as possible, and the potential for bad weather, depending on your location, are all contributors to the danger of holiday traveling. This holiday season, it is imperative that you take the steps to protect you and your family when traveling. The following are just a few things that you can do to make your travels safer:

Create an Emergency Road Kit

Having an emergency kit in your vehicle is something that should be done all year long, but can be extra beneficial during the holidays when you are on a tight schedule. The American Automobile Association (AAA) advises that an emergency kit should contain a basic first aid kit, jumper cables, and inclement weather tools ( ice scraper, snow brush, shovel, etc) if the climate you live in so requires. There are other items that can be helpful, as well. Hats, gloves, blankets, towels, flashlight, batteries, tools, chargers and drinks and snacks are all things to keep with you with you when traveling.

Perform Vehicle Maintenance

One of the best ways to ensure you make it to your destination is to make sure that your car is running properly. Do this in advance of your trip so that if there are any issues, they can be taken care of well before you need to leave. Checking the brakes, battery, ignition system, heating and cooling functions, windshield wipers, antifreeze levels, and tires are all important in maintaining your vehicle’s proper function.

Prepare for Inclement Weather

While there is no guarantee that weather reports are always 100% accurate, check the weather before you embark on your trip. North Carolina weather can sometimes be unpredictable, so it is important to check road conditions and traffic. Additionally, track the weather and conditions along the route to your destination. If you know that there is going to be inclement weather, try to plan your trip to avoid it as best as you can.
