Rollover Accidents: What You Need to Know

Rollover Accidents: What You Need to Know

Accidents happen quite often, but luckily, most of them are minor fender-benders. Some crashes, however, are more serious and may result in significant injuries or even fatalities. Motor vehicle accidents are a major cause of death among young people. Accidents occur in a variety of different ways. One of the most severe types of accidents happens when a vehicle rolls over. Almost every type of vehicle is capable of rolling over, depending on the circumstances of the crash.

How Do Rollover Accidents Happen?

Rollovers can happen quickly during an accident. T-bone accidents, where one vehicle hits the other at the side, can result in rollovers. The force of the impact could cause the vehicle to tip or roll. Speed often plays a role in rollovers. When a vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed, is it easier to leave the pavement when it hits a bump or curb? The force can set the vehicle in motion, sometimes in a rollover. A vehicle may roll when it is hit at just the right angle and speed.

Ejection

Unfortunately, the possibility of ejection is higher than for some other types of crashes. There is a five times higher fatality rate for those who are ejected in a rollover than those who aren’t. Ejection occurs when an unsecured driver or passenger is expelled from the vehicle while it is rolling over. If a person is ejected from the vehicle, they will likely suffer severe or life-threatening injuries. Ejections often result in death, even when the accident happens at a low rate of speed.

Types of Rollovers

Rollover accidents are categorized by type. There are various types of rollovers depending on the situation. A flip-over happens when a vehicle hits a ramp-like object, such as a guardrail. A bounce over happens when a vehicle rolls after hitting an object at a high rate of speed. A fall-over occurs when a vehicle rolls while traversing downward, often on uneven surfaces. A collision with another vehicle is a common type of rollover.

The number of rolls a vehicle takes may depend on the speed of impact and other factors. A vehicle may roll a quarter-turn, so that it ends on its side. A half-turn is when the vehicle lands on its roof. A vehicle may actually rotate more than once, which is an extremely serious accident. The impact of the roof on the driver and passengers can be devastating. Although the crash itself may be over in just a few seconds, it can have lifelong medical consequences.

Preventing Rollover Accidents and Injuries

Rollover accidents are preventable. Defensive driving is one of the best ways to prevent a rollover crash. Choose a vehicle that is safe and that has a design that makes it less likely to roll over in an accident. Always wear your seatbelt and make sure all passengers also wear their seatbelts. Make sure children are in the correct type of safety seat and that it is properly secured in the vehicle. Secure pets while driving. Keep the inside of your car clean to prevent injuries from flying debris during an accident.
